This Fish curry recipe is super easy in preparation but delicious in taste, tremendous in flavor, and well attractive in color. This curry contains fried fish with tasty gravy. You can eat this fish curry recipe with rice, roti, and also nan.

The method of Preparation is different in different regions. So, In India different types of fish curry are available.

I am very glad that I belong to the Odisha coastal region where lots of sea fish are available easily. Here most of the people are fish lovers. Here different types of fish are available. They are different in size and variety. The local language of fish is Machha.


Some of variety are rohi (Labeo rohita), bhakur(Labeo catla),Magura(catfish),Mirikali(mackerel),sheula(murrel),kerandi(minnow),Chandi(silver pomfret)


Types Of Fish Curry Recipe

Actually different types of fish curry recipes are present among them these are a few recipes. These recipes are different according to their cooking procedure and ingredient use. Some of them are

Machha Besara

Machha Besara 

 
In this recipe, fried fish is cooked with mustard paste. Machha Besara is a tasty recipe. In this recipe, we used a paste of mustard seed, garlic, and Chilli as key ingredients. We add Fried fish to the mustard gravy. If you want to take less oil then you can add fish without fry. Believe me, this type of curry is also tasty as fried fish. Later I will share the machha besar recipe in detail in a separate post.

Machha Patra poda

In this recipe, small fish are roasted with a mustard paste that is wrapped in pumpkin leaves. We leave to eat this patra poda recipe as a side item of pakhala.

Maccha do pyaz 

This recipe is very simple. Any person can prepare this recipe very easily. Fry all the fish pieces till golden color. Then give a temper to fish with more amount of onions, green chilies, and a few mustard seeds.

Actually, this recipe is one of the best side recipes of pakhala. This recipe is very easy to cook and also good in taste.

Machha Ambala 

This is a delicious recipe. This recipe contains a balance of sweet, sour, and spicy because we used tamarind and jaggery both in this recipe.
So this recipe is the best recipe for sour lovers people.

Dahi machha 

 Dahi means curd and machha means fish. In this recipe, we used curd and fish. Curd is the key ingredient in this recipe. This is one mouth-watering dish. If you love curd and fish both then this recipe will be your favorite recipe.

Fish curry

This Fish curry is a common recipe. This curry can be prepared easily with ingredients like onion, garlic, and ginger paste with a few other spices. This curry is very delicious in taste and also good in flavor. Here I am going to share a fish curry Recipe. You can prepare this recipe in two types i.e  thick gravy type and the other is runny type gravy.

 

Ingredients For Fish Curry Recipe

Fish                                     500 gram
Onions(large)                       2 no
Garlic                                   8-10 cloves
Ginger                                  one  small piece
Tomato                                 1 no
Cumin whole                        1/2 tsp
Turmeric pwd                       1 tsp
Cumin pwd                           1 tsp
Coriander pwd                     1 tsp
Red chili pwd.                      1 tsp        
Cinnamon whole                  small piece 
Cardamom whole                2-3 piece
Garam masala pwd             1 tsp
Bay leaf                               1 no
Oil                                        4 tbsp
Salt according to taste

 

How to Marinate Fish

  1. Wash fish properly.
  2. Then add turmeric pwd 1/2 tbsp.
  3. Add salt according to your taste. 
  4. Mix all the ingredients properly and leave for 30 minutes.

Preparation for Fish Curry

Cut 1/2  onion into Julianne and rest of the onion into big size for grinding and cut the ginger into small size then make a paste of onion, garlic cloves, and ginger. Cut tomato into cubes. Chopped the coriander leaves.

Procedure For Fish Fry

  1. Put a pan on the gas on a high flame.
  2. Then add 2tbsp oil to the surface of the pan and spread the oil to all sides of the pan.
  3. Add 3-4 pieces of fish to the pan on medium flame.
  4. After 1 to 2 minutes flip the fish.
  5. Then after 2 Minutes flip the fish again and fry on low flame for golden brown.
  6. After 1 Minute flips again and fry another side to get a golden color.
  7. Now both side becomes golden brown in color.
  8. Now take out fried fish to a plate.

Procedure for Fish Curry

  1. Now put another pan or Kadai on the gas.
  2. Add 2 tbsp of oil to the Kadai.
  3. Then add one bay leaf into the oil.
  4. Add cinnamon whole, cardamom whole, and cumin whole into the oil.
  5. Add onion Julianne into the oil.
  6. When onion becomes golden brown in color then.
  7. Add onion, garlic, and ginger paste into the oil and saute these spices.
  8. Now add cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and red chilly pwd.
  9. Add little water into spice paste and saute very well.
  10. When a spicy aroma comes from the paste then add tomato cubes and mix well.Fish curry recipe
  11. When the tomato will be cooked it will mix with all spices.
  12. Then add 2 cups of water into spices cover it and leave to boil.
  13. When the gravy starts to boiling add all the fish pieces.
  14. Now add salt. (be careful fish already salted in Marination)
  15. After a few minutes gravy will decrease in quantity and the fish becomes soft.Fish curry recipe
  16. Now, is the time to add garam masala powder.
  17. Then add chopped coriander into the curry.
  18. Now turn off the gas and take out the curry into a plate.
  19. Now fish curry recipe is ready to eat.
 

Note

Generally in this type of fish curry, we use deep fry or shallow fry fish. If you want to consume less oil then add fish without fry.

 

Some questions about the recipe

Q. Can we use potatoes in this curry?

Ans:- yes, you can use potatoes in this recipe but you can use boiled potatoes which should saute with a little amount of oil before adding them to the curry. Because potato pieces take more time to boil than fish.

 

Q. Can we use it without fry fish in this curry?

Ans:- Yes, If you want you can use fish without frying. This type of curry is also very good in taste. You can feel a little bit of difference in the taste of fish. Without fried fish are softer than fried fish.

Q. Can we take this fish curry in the main course?

Ans:- This fish curry is the main course recipe.

Q. Can we eat fried fish before making curry?

Ans:- Yes, you can eat fried fish. For that you Fry fish till golden color when the good smell will come from fish then you can eat this fish. We enjoy this fried fish with our popular recipe pakhala.

Q. Can we add mixed vegetables to this recipe?


Ans:-No, you can’t add mixed vegetables into this recipe. If you add mixed vegetables to fish that recipe is known as chhinchada. This is an authentic recipe. This recipe is dry type. In this recipe, we add all green vegetable pieces with potatoes. We also add fish pieces with fish head parts and cooked with onion, garlic ginger paste with other ingredients. This is very tasty.
